A Gift from Dream

A Gift from Dream

Written by Priyanka Banerjee,West Bengal (India)

Nanu was a boy of twelve. After returning from school he roamed here and there with his father to sell tea.

It was summer and Nanu was sitting under a tree. That day he had been selling tea alone as his father was ill. A little fairy came with her small fairy stick. Nanu was surprised to see such a beautiful creature. He had a firm belief that fairy existed only in stories but he never expected to see one in front of him.Nanu was spellbound . “My name is Bliss, I live in this tree. I see you everyday. You really work hard”, said the little fairy. Nanu , who was still in awe, replied, “Yy..e..ss, I mean no”. Bliss smiled and said, “Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you. You can make any wish, I will fulfil it.” Nanu said to the fairy, “ Thank you Bliss; but I don’t want anything from you.” “Why?”, the fairy was surprised. “I have everything little fairy”, Nanu continued, “I am happy with whatever I have.” The fairy was very happy to hear these words from Nanu and she told, “Nanu you are a really good soul and you are going to have a great life ahead. I will always be there for you.” Saying this the fairy vanished.

With a sudden jerk Nanu woke up, “Why are you sleeping here Nanu? Are you okay?”- it was Nanu’s mother. Nanu was a little bit puzzled, “Where is the fairy ma?”, asked Nanu. “Which fairy? Do you have fever? Or were you having a dream ?”, asked Nanu’s mother. She seemed a little bit tensed. Nanu did not say anything. He understood it was a dream . The sun had set already and it was dark. The yellow street lights were glowing dimly. As soon as Nanu picked his empty kettle up it felt heavier than the other days. Immediately he opened it and found a medium sized box. He looked at his mother. “Where did you get it from?”, asked Nanu's mother. “I don’t know ma”, replied Nanu. He opened the box and he was astonished- it was a small idol of that beautiful fairy, made of gold. There was also a beautifully written note which said, “Keep me safe at the left corner of our shelf.” “Nanu , tell me the truth , where did you get it from?”, asked Nanu's mother firmly. With tears in his eyes Nanu narrated his whole dream and said, “I am telling the truth ma, I didn’t take it from anyone, that fairy must have gifted me this.” Nanu's mother knew that he always spoke the truth. She believed Nanu and told, “ Except your father don’t say this to anyone else. It should be kept as a secret among three of us.” Nanu nodded.

Nanu and his family kept it safe from that day. They never thought it to sell. Gradually their situation improved. Within two years Nanu's father opened a tea stall of his own and one day it changed into a big shop. Nanu started going to school regularly and studied properly. Their lives changed forever and they lived happily.
